This hanging steel sculpture of spun steel and torqued round rod was inspired by the Philodendron vine, whose leaves layer in lush, overlapping tiers—resembling elephant ears wrapped around a tree trunk. I first observed this striking effect in the tropical forests of Kauai. To echo the vine’s rhythmic layering, I sourced compound-curved steel forms that mirrored the leaf forms with surprising accuracy. Studying the plant more closely, I discovered that its shoots emerge in groups of three along the vine—three to a whorl—a pattern that echoes the Fibonacci sequence, first articulated by the mathematician during the Renaissance.
What other patterns in nature have you noticed that reveal an underlying order or rhythm?
